The Blood of God

But in recent months, I have noticed that there is an encroaching heresy on the blood, that there are people who say that the blood of Jesus was not human, it was divine. One pastor said to me, “He had the blood of God.” I said, “What is the blood of God?” He said, “Divine blood.” I said, “God is a spirit, that was the blood of Christ, that was the blood of a man, He was one hundred percent man.” It’s heretical to call the blood of Jesus Christ the blood of God, and it demonstrates a failure to understand what theologians have called the hypostatic union, that is the God-man union in Christ.

~ John MacArthur, The Blood of Christ

This statement of John MacArthur in 1987 was posted on Twitter. On the contrary, Dr. Tony Costa, in the video below, after providing the biblical text (Acts 20:28) that gives us reason to call the blood of Jesus Christ the blood of God quoted three of the early church fathers who has no problem in saying that the blood of Christ is the blood of God, here they are:

"Ignatius, who is also called Theophorus, to the Church which is at Ephesus, in Asia, deservedly most happy, being blessed in the greatness and fullness of God the Father, and predestinated before the ages of time, that it should be always for an enduring and unchangeable glory, being united and elected through the true passion by the will of the Father, and JESUS, OUR GOD: Abundant happiness through Jesus Christ, and His undefiled grace... I have become acquainted with your name, much-beloved in God, which you have acquired by the habit of righteousness, according to the faith and love in Jesus Christ our Saviour. Being the followers of God, and stirring up yourselves by the BLOOD OF GOD, you have perfectly accomplished the work which was beseeming to you."
~Ignatius, "The Epistle of Ignatius to the Ephesians"
"So far as I know,'we are not our own, but bought with a price;' and what kind of price? The blood of God."
~ Tertullian, To His Wife, Book 2. Chap.3.
"...we bear, protected as it is by the power of God the Father, and the blood of God the Son, and the dew of the Holy Spirit. But be not deceived, you who has tasted of the truth, and been reckoned worthy of the great redemption."
~ Clement of Alexandria, Who is the Rich Man That Shall Be Saved? 34.

The Blood of Christ can also be called the blood of God because of the communication of properties. To put it simply, What can be said of the divine attribute of the divine nature can be said about the person of God the Son. What can be said of the human properties of Christ’s nature can be said of the person of the Son of God. As the God-man, the blood of Jesus Christ is the blood of God.

To God be the glory!
