Q.102. What is the eighth commandment?

A.   The eighth commandment is, “You shall not steal.” (Exo 20:15)

Some may think that the eighth commandment is only for thieves and not for ordinary citizens. But it was commanded directly to the people of Israel, along with the nine commandments. It shows the recognition that God has given blessings for each person and it should be taken care of. Everyone should be faithful and be content with it. The 110th question of the Heidelberg Catechism (1563) explains this:

Q. 110. What does God forbid in the eighth commandment?

A. He forbids not only outright theft and robbery, punishable by law. But in God’s sight theft also includes cheating and swindling our neighbor by schemes made to appear legitimate, such as: inaccurate measurements of weight, size, or volume; fraudulent merchandising; counterfeit money; excessive interest; or any other means forbidden by God. In addition, he forbids all greed and pointless squandering of his gifts.

To God be the glory!

Note: This question is #101 in the Children’s Catechism
