Ang Ikalimang Utos ay ito:
“Igalang mo ang iyong ama at ang iyong ina, upang ang iyong mga araw ay humaba sa lupaing ibinibigay sa iyo ng PANGINOON mong Diyos.”
Exodus 20:12
Ang ikalimang utos ay nagtuturo hindi lamang ng paggalang sa mga magulang kundi maging ng mga awtoridad na inilagay ng Diyos upang mamuno sa atin. Tayo ay nararapat na magpasakop sa kanila. Ang relasyon natin sa ating mga magulang ay una at pinakamahalagang relasyon kasunod ng relasyon natin sa Diyos. Ito ay humuhubog ng iba pang mga relasyon. Sa buhay ng mga Israelita, napakahalaga ng paggalang sa mga magulang, sila ay dapat na magpasakop, sumunod, at magbigay galang dahil ito ang nararapat na gawin sa mata ng Diyos (Ephesians 6:1). Ang pagsuway sa magulang ay pagsuway sa Diyos.
Ang utos na ito ay una sa ikalawang bahagi ng sampung utos na may kinalaman sa ating kapwa. Sa lahat ng mga utos ito lamang ang may kaakibat na pangako. Sa pamilya, sa ilalim ng pamumuno ng ating mga magulang, ating matututunan ang pagpapala ng paggalang at pagsunod. Dito natin matututunan ang may mga itinalagang pamamahala ang Diyos sa mundo. Sabi ni Augustine, “Kung ang isang tao ay sumusuway sa kanyang mga magulang, sino pa ang hindi niya kayang suwayin?”
Ito ay gabay sa mga magulang sa pagtuturo gamit ang Katekismong Baptist para sa mga bata.

Q.96. What is the fifth commandment?
A. The fifth commandment is, “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the LORD your God is giving you.”
The fifth commandment teaches not only respect/honor for parents but also for the authorities that God has placed to rule over us. We must submit to them. Our relationship with our parents is first and foremost after our relationship with God. It shapes other relationships. In the lives of the Israelites, honoring parents was so important, they were to submit, obey, and honor because this is right in the eyes of the LORD (Ephesians 6: 1). Disobedience to parents is disobedience to God.
This commandment is the first of the second part of the ten commandments concerning our neighbors. Of all the commandments it is the only one with a promise. In the family, under the leadership of our parents, we can learn the blessings of respect and obedience. Here we learn that God has ordained authority in the world. Augustine said, “If anyone fails to honor his parents, is there anyone he will spare?”
