Sa Sampung utos ng Diyos, ang ika-apat na utos ay ibinigay bilang isa sa pinakamahalagang utos para sa bayan ng Israel. Ito ang pinakamahaba at detalyadong utos. Ito din ay mas madalas na binabanggit kaysa sa ilang mga utos (11 na ulit sa aklat ni Moises at higit 100 na ulit sa lumang tipan). Q.91. What is the fourth commandment?
A. The fourth commandment is,
“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the LORD your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates. For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.” (Exodus 20:8-11)
Of the Ten Commandments of God, the fourth commandment is given as one of the most important commandments for the people of Israel. This is the longest and most detailed command. It is also mentioned more often than some of the commandments (11 times in the book of Moses and over 100 times in the Old Testament). With the exception of the day of Atonement, the Sabbath is the only day on which any work is forbidden. Before it was formally given to the people of Israel it was already given to them as a day of rest (Exodus 16:23).
