SCBC Lord’s day #51

The Streams of all religion runs either deep or shallow according as the banks of the Sabbath are kept up or neglected. Matthew Henry

Worship is not only doing what pleases God but also being pleased with what God does.

Bella Vista Sunday School: Exposition of 1689 London Baptis Confession of Faith (Bro. Ghan)

Chapter 4 paragraph 2: God’s creation of male and female. Image of God (Latin: Imago Dei)

After God had made all other creatures, He created man, male and female,4 with reasonable and immortal souls,5 rendering them fit unto that life to God for which they were created; being made after the image of God, in knowledge, righteousness, and true holiness;6 having the law of God written in their hearts,7 and power to fulfill it, and yet under a possibility of transgressing, being left to the liberty of their own will, which was subject to change
  • The Meaning of Imago Dei – Genesis 1:27, Ecc 12:7
  • The Weight of Imago Dei – Gen 9:6, De 32:35, 1 Sam 2:26
  • The Distortion of Imago Dei – Rom 1:18-22
    • The distorted image can only be restored in Christ (Col 3:10)

Bella Vista Morning Message: Expository Series on 1 John (Bro. Jeff)

Sermon Text: 1 Jn 2:29 – The Righteous Ones are Born of God

Message: Since Jesus is the righteous One, those who are truly born of Him live a righteous life.

Two important truths about practical righteousness

  1. All who know the righteous One lives righteously (2:1).
    • The Source of Righteous Life – Jesus is our righteousness (1 Cor 1:30).
    • The Practice of a Righteous Life – 1 Jn 3:7
      • The righteous Redeemer produces righteous believers.
  2. All who live righteously are born of God
    • Being born again precedes practical righteousness – Jeremiah 13:23, 3 Jn 1:11
    • Being born again is evidenced by a righteous life – Matthew 7:14, John 3:8
The new birth or regeneration is an inner recreating of fallen human nature by the Holy Spirit. It changes the disposition from lawless, godless self-seeking into one of trust and love, of repentance for past rebelliousness and unbelief, and loving compliance with God's law henceforth. It enlightens the blinded mind to discern spiritual realities and liberates and energizes the enslaved will for free obedience to God. – J.I Packer

Application:

  • Any professed righteousness is only true in Christ
  • Anyone who is born of God will definitely show outwardly the inward change wrought by the Spirit.
  • Anyone who professes to know Christ should examine himself if his life reflects the life of Christ.

SCBC Sunday School: Exposition of 1689 London Baptist Confession of Faith (Ptr. Jeremiah)

Chapter 30:1 Of the Lord’s Supper

The Background of the Lord’s Supper

  • The fellowship meal is a primary part of the work of Christ – Mat.8:10-11, Luke 24:41-43, Juan 21:9-14 Gawa 10:40-41
  • The LORD desires that we be with Him in fellowship on His table through the Spirit until He comes – Acts 2:42, 46, 6:1-2

SCBC Morning Message: Expository Series on the Book of Romans (Ptr. Jeremiah)

Roma 11:7-10 – The blessings sought became a curse

  • Assertion – Israel failed to obtain what it was seeking.
  • Validation – Old Testament citations – Isaias 29:10 + Deut. 29:4 + Isaias 6:9
When God brings revival to our city, may we as a local church not be bypassed because of pride. Let us be careful as well to give back to God the glory.

SCBC Afternoon Message: Pastor Jeremiah

Verse: Luke 14:16-24 – The Banquet of the King

The gospel is compared to a feast where the guests do not want to come.

  1. The Great Feast v. 16
    • The Great offer of the feast
    • The Rejection of the Offer – 3 kinds of excuses (18-21). Making excuse is equivalent to rejecting the invitation.
  2. The Unlikely Guests v. 21
    • None can be too bad for the invitation of God.
  3. The Urgent Commandgo quickly…
    • The feast is now ready. Are we ready to go out and call the sinners?
    • The great feast is ready, the sinners are welcome, the call ia urgent. Shall we not go out and call them?

OFW Message: Expository Series on the Book of Galatians (Ptr. Jeremiah)

Verse: Galatians 6:17-18

  1. Trials are consistent with the life of every believer
    • No one is exempted (Acts 14:22)
    • Paul suffered greatly (2 Cor 11:24-25, Acts 14:19,20, Gal 5:11)
    • Christians are blessed for being persecuted – 1 John 3:13
      • The world hates the image of Christ in us yet we gladly suffer for the sake of Christ.
  2. Scars characterize true servants of God
    • The mark of suffering with Christ
      • This is the identifying mark of a servant
      • All who are in Christ are bondslaves of Christ. Christ’s Lorship is essential to the gospel (Romans 10:9-10, Acts 2:36)
      • Do you have the brand marks that you really belong to Christ?
      • Are you really a servant of Christ? Have you been dethroned from your self-sufficiency?
    • The mark of ownership by Christ
      • Nothing is more important for Christians than to be owned by Christ.
      • There is no greater gift than being reconciled with God.
We serve our master with all our strength and we do so with excellence. The faithful servant of God seeks to purge himself of the things that do not please His Master.
