SCBC Lord’s day #39

I will give thanks to the LORD with my whole heart; I will recount all of your wonderful deeds. I will be glad and exult in you; I will sing praise to your name, O Most High.

Psa 9:1-2 ESV
What fitter day to ascend to heaven, than that on which He arose from earth, and fully triumphed over death and hell. Use your Sabbaths as steps to glory, till you have passed them all, and are there arrived. ~ Richard Baxter

Sunday School: Exposition of 1689 London Baptist Confession of Faith (Ptr. jeremiah)

Chapter 28. Of baptism and the Lord’s Supper, Paragraph 1. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are ordinances of positive and sovereign institution, appointed by the Lord Jesus, the only lawgiver,1 to be continued in his church to the end of the world.

The Nature of the Ordinances :

  • Its Divine Necessity – It was given with authority by the King. It is not optional
  • Its Confessional Wording – Baptists used ordinances instead of “sacraments”
  • Its Sacred Emphasis – The Word of God should accompany the ordinances
Right understanding of the gospel leads to proper execution of the ordinances.

Morning Message: Expository Series on the gospel of mark – Mark 2:1-12 (Bro. Ghan)

Jesus the Son of Man

  • It is a Messianic Title – related to His sufferings and death, and powerful and glorious return
  • It is a Divine-Human Title – Jesus is the God-man
The object of our faith is Jesus Christ, the Son of Man. Truly God and Truly Man. Two distinct natures in one person. Deny his humanity, then he cannot represent humanity before God. If he is not human, he cannot obey the Law of God. Deny his deity, then his death is just for himself. Because if the one died at the cross is merely a man. He accomplished nothing. He cannot face the Holy God. He cannot satisfy the justice of God. But thanks be to God, He is the God-Man. The Mediator between God and man.

Morning Message: Expository Series on the Book of Romans (Ptr. jeremiah)

Romans 10:1-3

  • Man’s Foolish Ignorance
  • Man’s Self-made Standards
  • Man’s Willful Rebellion
The righteousness that God demands cannot be earned. It must be received as a free gift by faith. Righteousness is not an attainment; it is a provision.

It is better to limp on the right way than to run mightily on the wrong way.

Augustine

Afternoon Message: Expository Series on Psalms 119 (Bro. Lorenzo)

I sought Your favor with all my heart; Be gracious to me according to Your word.

Psalm 119:58 NASB

To entreat God’s favor is:

  • To seek His face
  • To ask for more grace
  • To seek Him with whole heart
Christians utmost desire should be to see the beauty of the LORD as it flows from a heart cleanse by the blood of Christ.

English Service: Obedience as assurance – 1 John 2:3-6 (Bro. Jeff)

Message: Obedience to God’s commandments gives us assurance of salvation.

Obedience gives assurance of salvation because:

  • It proves that we know God
  • It shows that we love God
It is not enough to say that we know Him. Knowledge should not only fill our brains. In fact, true knowledge engages the mind, stirs the hearts, and moves hands and feet to obey the LORD’s commands.

OFW WORSHIP: Expository series on the book of galatians – Galatians 5:10-12 (Ptr. jeremiah)

Why is it a stumbling block the unbelievers when we preach the cross of Christ?

  • Because of the person of Jesus Christ
  • Because it declares the wrath of God upon sinful men
  • Because it humbles the pride of man
  • Because it makes demands upon a sinner
We expose sin through the bad news, but we proclaim the good news, the only remedy to sin... Christianity startlingly declares that Jesus is the only Way, and man has nothing to offer before God from themselves that they may earn salvation... The message of the cross is glorious. Yes, it humbles the pride of man but it sets them free!

Blessed Lord’s Day!
